Podiatry Services are delivered by a team of HCPC Registered Podiatrists and are assisted by Podiatry Assistant Practitioners. Podiatry services maintain the foot health of patients who through complex medical needs have feet that are considered as being at high risk of developing limb threatening conditions such as Ulcers and infection. The podiatry services also offer short term interventions for patients with no medical need, offering advice and education on management of their problem accompanied by an individualised treatment plan, this can include Nail surgery for ingrowing toe nails and Biomechanical assessments for people with foot and leg pain.

Falls Prevention
Falls and injuries associated with falls are common for people aged 65 years and over. The reason why a person falls can be due to physical, environmental and medical risk factors. Falling is NOT an inevitable part of getting older. Research has shown that by assessing for risks to an individual and then dealing with each, the risk of having a fall can be reduced and falls prevented.
The Falls Prevention Service offers:
- Level 2 multifactorial falls assessment
- Falls prevention advice – general advice can be found in the Falls Prevention Advice Booklet
- Onward referral to other services and professionals if required
- Access to strength and balance exercise programmes at various locations across the Trust

Continence Service
The primary aim of the Continence Service is to provide individualised care programmes for patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction, and where possible, to totally alleviate incontinence. The secondary aims of the service are to provide education to the multi-disciplinary team, to raise awareness, ensure cost effectiveness, to ensure provision of quality and appropriate continence products to our clients, and to improve accessibility to the service.
The Continence Service is available to all clients who reside within geographical confines of the Trust area with the main base offices being in Bangor Hospital, Downe Hospital and Lisburn Health Centre.
There are several satellite clinics conducted every week to ensure accessibility for our patients, and we try and identify new locations that would improve accessibility for our clients.
The referral protocol is a very open one, and consists of only three criteria:
- patients are mobile enough to be able to access clinic settings (although domiciliary visits can be arranged)
- are motivated to comply with treatment programmes
- and have no cognitive impairment

The Early Pregnancy Clinic (EPC) is a nurse-led clinic supported by the on-call medical team- including a lead consultant gynaecologist. We manage early pregnancy problems such as vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain and see women from about 6 weeks up until their booking appointment.
We also see women with a history of ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy and recurrent miscarriage (3 or more consecutive losses).
Our clinic runs 7 mornings a week strictly by appointment and referrals are accepted from GPs, the Emergency Department, midwives and other health care professionals. However, we also have a telephone answer machine service which can be used for self-referrals (028) 9598 8085. Stress Control
This is a six session class provided free of charge by the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust and delivered by experienced qualified cognitive-behavioural psychotherapists. The sessions run over a six week period and are for people who want to learn some great ways to control common problems such as anxiety, depression, panic, poor sleep, burnout, loss of confidence or low self-esteem (in other words, ‘stress’) and their families, friends and colleagues.
They will teach people to ‘become their own therapist’ so they are encouraged to work hard at practising the skills they learn in each session. Each session builds together like pieces of a jigsaw to enable people to deal with their individual difficulties. Booklets, relaxation tips and general information leaflets will be provided.
There is no referral system, just turn up, take a seat, then sit back and learn some great ways to control stress. It is a very relaxed informal setting and people can come and go as they need. Stress Control is a class not ‘group therapy’ – you do not have to talk about personal difficulties in front of others.
